There are five phases to studying Kalaripayattu, and even with the best training facility, it will take a lifetime to fully understand each technique. But, if you achieve a basic proficiency, you will advance to the following stage at Gurukal's discretion.

1. Meypayattu

Mey translates to Body and Payattu to Battle.

This is the foundation of Kalari and combines attacking and defensive strategies. One must first complete training in Chuvadu (also known as leg kicks) and Vadivvu before beginning Meypayattu. Vadivv, which translates to "postures," refers to the stances, attitudes, and postures taken when different animals engage the fight-or-flight mode for self-defense. There are eight unique Vadivvu. This aids in:

  • Developing equilibrium and physical stability

  • Increasing metabolism

  • Improving cardiovascular health

You will benefit from Kalarippayattu training in these animal positions if you also do other fitness activities like weightlifting, yoga, and running.
